For my project, most of the images I've created are related to the horrors of space and the destruction of Earth. This past summer for my internship, I had to do a lot of research surrounding AI speech and image generators- as a result, I am aware not just of the training databases required for these models, but also of the biases that many of them fall victim to. OpenAI and their GPT3 (DALL-E) model, which fell under scrutiny as a result of subtle racial and cultural biases, had a very interesting documentation post that I read, where they spoke about how they retrained it, linked here.
I know how AIs can replicate human biases, even when they are subconscious- for my project, I would like to explore how these massive training sets might expose our subconscious fears about space exploration and planetary extinction. I, for one, am and scared stiff by what sits at the bottom of the ocean, but the human dream of abandoning earth for the stars isn't something I relate to, especially when I think about which wackos are currently major players in human space exploration.
Some of the images I've created are really haunting and tap into the exact existentialism that I want to talk about in this project. The old plot of "lost, alone, in space" is probably in my top 3 worst fears (behind zombie apocalypse and needles), and I want to make images and glitches that really embody that loneliness and horror.
