Project 1: Statement Blog - "Visions of the Unknown"

Updated: Sep 27, 2022

I wanted to explore planetary horror themes and space exploration's existential crisis. The old plot of "lost, alone, in space" is one that has frightened me since I was a child, and I want to make images and glitches that really embody that loneliness and horror. Space, to me, is one of those things that I admire and fear. I want this project to reflect my distrust for human expansion into Space- we have a sordid history in colonization, and I loathe to think how the bloodthirst and greed of my ancestors will reflect when we, as a species, move into the galaxy. I wanted the medium of AI image generation to mix with the glitches so that they added to my hesitance of tech rather than distracted me from my message. Overall, the iconography worked really well to demonstrate my theme, and the glitch only furthered my message regarding technological advancement. I titled this series "Visions of the Unknown" based on the NASA library titled "Visions of the Future" where they present planets and systems as promotional posters. So many people think of space exploration as vital to the survival of our species, but I wanted to make these posters a reminder of what it really is- a venture into the unknown.
