Project 2 - Statement blog: "Dragons!"

Updated: Dec 14, 2022

I based my models on alligators, crocodiles, bat wings, and dinosaur horns. I wanted them to feel like fantastical animals that wouldn't exist in our world, so I made my first model purple and pink. I couldn't change the skin color for my second model, so I think I'll return and make it a deep burgundy red or royal blue. I'm also going to return to my purple dragon to alter its animation rigging, so it has as much movement as my chunky guy. These two animals feel related but different, and I really enjoy the whimsy of both of them. I wanted to make sure they felt like whole creatures, and not like they were half-formed, so I gave one horn and the other feet since it balanced the overall composition of each well while still showing them off as separate species. I struggled with some of the blender textures, and know that 3D sculpting etiquette dictates that you should shade your objects smooth, but I think the texture of each of them feels right and adds character. There are a few elements of the anatomy that I feel could be tweaked, but I think everything came out really cute and well-formed.

Overall, I'm pretty glad about the results of this project and have very few edits to make regarding modeling come my second round- I might make the purple dragon's wings bigger so that my rigging will have more to grab onto, but that might not be the right answer.
